Local Player Hammad Miah Joins The World Snooker Main Tour!

Congratulations to Hammad Miah in qualifying from Q School – Event One to become a Snooker Professional on the World Snooker Main Tour with a two year card for the 2013/14 and 2014/15 seasons.  Hammad impressed his rivals by winning five straight matches at Q School to earn him a well deserved place on the World Snooker Main Tour.

Hammad is one of our young ex-league players who used to play for Old Harlow War Memorial and helped them win the league a couple of seasons ago.  He first played the game under the watchful eyes of ex-snooker professional Jason Pegrum at Pockets Snooker Club at Ware and having first picked up a cue in 2001, has turned professional within 12 years, a remarkable achievement.  As an amateur player in 2012, Hammad reached the Southern Final of the English Amateur Championship and also the Semi Final of the IBSF World Under 21 Snooker Championship in China.

This month Hammad will join around 120+ other snooker professionals on the Main Tour on a two year contract and the new flat draw format in place for the first round of many of the events could see him playing household names on a regular basis.  Look out Ronnie O’Sullivan!

Hammad told World Snooker in a recent interview;

“It feels amazing to be on the tour. I have put in a lot of hard work for this. A few players were saying this week they thought I would get through, but I just had to avoid distractions and try to win matches. There were a few nerves today but I am mentally strong.

“I know it’s going to be really tough on the tour and I have seen other players struggle. But I want to do something, I won’t be there just to make the numbers up.”

Hammad’s first match as a professional snooker player in a world ranking event is in round one of the Wuxi Classic against World Number 35 Jack Lisowski, matches are being played between 27-29 May 2013.  The Wuxi Classic is the first event to use the new 128 flat structure for ranking tournaments, with all players starting in the first round.  The winners of the qualifying matches will go through to the venue stage in Wuxi, China, from 17-23 June 2013.

Hammad is managed by his good friend and mentor Steve Bothwell of Bullet Brickwork (UK) Ltd.  If any companies or individuals are interested in sponsoring Hammad for a particular event then please contact Steve Bothwell on 07957-123411 for further details.  Packages can be tailor made to suit your requirements and budget.

We will keep you updated with Hammad’s progress.  Good luck from us all at SWDSL!  You can follow Hammad on Twitter @HammadMiah147

Seventh Heaven for Ingram at Trophy Presentation / Finals Evening – Saturday 18 May 2013

The 51st snooker season of the DMC Leisure Saffron Walden & District Snooker League concluded on the evening of Saturday 18 May 2013 with the finals of the Handicap Singles and Scratch Singles being played and the presentation of the trophies won during the season.

At 4.45pm the Handicap Singles final kicked off with Pat Manley (Newport Ex Cons) taking on Peter Saville (Dunmow Club).  With Pat having a handicap of -6 and Peter -1, the match was virtually a scratch affair.  Both players have pedigree in the tournament with Pat a previous winner in the 1991/92 season, and Peter a runner up in 1996/97 and 1998/99.  In frame one, Peter struggled to find the sort of form which saw him reach his third final and with Pat finding his range early on, he soon eased to a 1-0 advantage.  In frame two Peter found his range and secured the frame with a double on the pink.  Peter started well in frame three but Pat eased ahead to take a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-five match and needed just one frame for victory.  Peter led in frame four but after being snookered twice by Pat, he gave away 28 points in fouls with the miss rule being called.  Despite this with both players needing blue and pink, Peter had first chance but in missing a chance on the blue handed the advantage back to Pat who calmly secured victory by potting the blue and pink.

At 8.15pm, the Scratch Singles final took centre stage with Adam Ingram aiming for a 7th title, and last years runner up, Michael Cushion looking to go one better and secure his first Scratch Singles title.  In the first frame, Michael started well with a good opening break but a rattled missed black ball allowed Adam to score enough points to draw level and continue to secure the first frame.  Adam dominated the play in frames two and three and at the interval look ominously comfortable with a 3-0 lead.  Adam continued well in frame four and although Michael looked as if he could start a comeback as Adam missed a straight forward pot on the pink for the match, but after a short safety exchange and snookers,  Adam slotted in the pink and black to secure a 4-0 victory and pick up an incredible 7th Scratch Singles title.

Following the conclusion of the Scratch Singles final, the trophy presentations took place.  Our Life President, Dan Lewis compered and Des Cooper of DMC Leisure, our league sponsor presented the trophies to the various winners.

To make a snooker season a success involves a lot of people giving up their free time to make it work, and this year the Committee are due a big thank you namely Dan Lewis (Life President), Cathy O’Neill (League Secretary), Adam Ingram (Tournament Secretary), Peter Saville (Vice Chairman/Treasurer/Website Administrator), Stuart Turner (Assistant Tournament Secretary), Mark Cooper, Stewart Hart and Bob Lovell.

In addition to the Committee, without the support of Saffron Snooker Club and DMC Leisure, the league would not be able to hold events such as the President’s Cup and the Trophy Presentation / Finals Evening.  We must also thank all the league venues who provided snooker tables for all the semi finals and finals this season, and to those individuals who gave up their time to referee and score the various matches.  Finally, without the support of  local businesses through sponsorship of our tournaments, we would not be able to offer the level of prize money and the quality of trophies that we have all come to expect, so again a big thank you to our sponsors Bullet Brickwork (UK) Ltd, Bushwood Accountants, Binder Loams, Tees Solicitors, GJM Plumbing Repairs, Hexagon Consulting and DMC Leisure.

President’s Cup Success For Mark Halls And Joe Fanthorpe

The President’s Cup, sponsored by Bullet Brickwork UK Ltd was held on Sunday 28 April 2013.  A strong field of 34 descended on Saffron Snooker Club and before the tournament got underway a one minute silence was held in respect of John Monk who had sadly passed away a few days earlier.

The tournament on the day was run by Tournament Secretary Adam Ingram, who was assisted by Stuart Turner.  The first round draw threw up a couple of exciting matches and it soon became clear that one half contained the majority of the minus handicapped players, with the other half mainly plus.  With Adam Ingram being in the half with the plus players and with the 85 maximum start rule in play, Adam seemed favourite to progress well through the field but crashed out in the first round leaving the draw wide open.

The Quarter Finals shaped up with Pat Manley v Peter Saville, Stuart Turner v Micky Cushion, Richard Livings v Phil Chapman and Mark Halls v Neil Winter.  With all matches being won 2-0, Manley took on Turner in the first semi final whilst Halls took on Chapman.  Whilst both Turner and Chapman had chances, the two in form players on the day, Pat Manley and Mark Halls came through to meet in the final.  Both players have shown good form either in the league or in tournaments this season but it was Mark Halls who battled through to win the President’s Cup 2-1 and collect the £75 first prize, with Pat receiving a consolation of £40 Runners Up prize.

Those players who got knocked out in their first playing round got a free entry in the Plate Tournament with one frame being played in each round including the final. The semi finals lined up with Adam Ingram taking on Michael Spackman, and Brendan Marling taking on Joe Fanthorpe.  Both Michael and Joe made it through to the final and Joe continued a fantastic run of form on the day by beating Michael to win his first tournament and collect the £20 first prize.

Trophies will be presented at Presentation Evening on Saturday 18th May 2013 at Saffron Snooker Club.

Recorded breaks over 25 :

Peter Saville 28, Kevin Starr 37, Pat Manley 42, Stuart Turner 48, Adam Ingram 79 and 100.

Adam’s century break secured him the £10 High Break Prize.

The Committee of the DMC Leisure Saffron Walden and District Snooker League would like to thank Bullet Brickwork UK Ltd for their continued sponsorship of our flagship day tournament, Saffron Snooker Club for providing the venue, Mark Cooper for preparing the tables and refereeing the final, and finally Adam Ingram and Stuart Turner for running the event.

John Monk – A Snooker Tribute

The Snooker League was saddened to hear the news this week that John Monk passed away on Wednesday 24 April 2013.  John had been actively involved with the snooker league for over 30 years both as a player and as a long serving Committee Member.

His involvement started at the old BAA Social Club and from there he encouraged those who worked at Stansted Airport to play snooker and join the league.  At its height, four teams played out of the BAA Social Club namely the Chipmunks, Harriers, Spitfires and Tornados.  John always kept the snooker table in immaculate condition and it was generally regarded as the best table in the league.  As such it hosted some classic Singles finals over the years and was a favourite venue for many.  When the BAA Social Club closed its doors for the final time a few years ago, John, along with his team mates, managed to purchase the snooker table and rehouse it at Takeley Social Club where it remains as the Takeley Chipmunks match table.

John regularly supported many of the league events during the season such as the President’s Cup, Presentation Evening and the AGM.  He always had a smile on his face and nothing was ever too much trouble when it came to the snooker league.

John will be greatly missed by us all and our thoughts are with his wife Joan, his family and team mates at this very sad time.  As a mark of respect for John’s passing, a one minute’s silence will be observed at the start of the President’s Cup this coming Sunday.

Once arrangements have been made for the funeral, we will update this post with the details.

Positions vacant on the Committee…..League Secretary and Committee Members

At the AGM on Tuesday 25th June 2013, we will be looking to fill the following positions on the Committee of the DMC Leisure Saffron Walden and District Snooker League in order that we can keep the Snooker League running smoothly during the seasons ahead.

  1. League Secretary – Cathy O’Neill is stepping down from this position but will remain on the Committee as Fixtures Secretary.  The League Secretary role involves being the initial point of contact both from outside and inside the league and forwarding any queries or issues onto the Committee for action.  The role also involves collecting the league results each week and inputting them into the handicaps spreadsheet which automatically produces the handicaps at each half of the season, therefore some basic knowledge of Microsoft Excel would be required.  The League Secretary also issues the Agenda and takes the Minutes for each Committee Meeting.
  1. Committee Members – We will have three vacant positions on the Committee.  Currently we have no representation for either the Four Player Division or Newport Club.

Without a new League Secretary, the league cannot function properly and it is important that this position is filled.  Cathy and the rest of the Committee will offer all necessary support to the person taking up the role to ensure a smooth handover whilst they are getting up to speed.

If you are interested in either of these positions on the Committee then please contact either Cathy O’Neill or Peter Saville in the first instance for further information or come along to the AGM and put your hand up!
