The Annual President’s Cup, sponsored by Bullet Brickwork UK Ltd was held on Sunday 31 January 2016 at Saffron Snooker Club, Saffron Walden, Essex.  The handicap singles best-of-3-frames event was supported with a strong field of 27 league players in attendance, all hoping to win the first prize of £80 and be the next name engraved on the prestigious President’s Cup.

Peter Saville and Mark Halls shake hands before the 2016 President’s Cup final

Semi Final Results;
Peter Saville 2-0 Richard Malyon
Mark Halls 2-0 Steve Stalley

Being virtually a scratch final, Mark received a 1 point headstart and in the first frame produced possibly his best frame of the day potting everything in sight and rapidly took the first frame by over 50 points.  Peter responded with a consistent display of potting in the second to draw the match level at 1-1.  With the title coming down to a deciding frame, Peter produced the type of snooker needed to take the match to Mark and in the end was too strong and secured a 2-1 win to take the President’s Cup title and collect the £80 first prize.  Mark received the consolation of the £40 Runners Up prize which he has donated to charity.  Both of the losing semi finalists, Steve Stalley and Richard Malyon each received £20.

Adrian Shoebridge and Jack Squires prepare to do battle in the best-of-three frames final

In the first semi final, Jack Squires took on Chris Patient receiving a 34 headstart, whilst Adrian Shoebridge had a 19 point headstart against Richard Breen.  After a long battle Adrian beat Richard 2-1 with a brown-to-black-clearance after coming to the table 21 points behind with 22 on in the deciding frame.  In the other semi final at 1-1, Chris needed just pink and black to win and having been left with the pink ball close to the corner pocket dragged the cue ball off line trying to hold for the black to hand Jack simple pots on the pink and black for victory and a place in the final.

With Adrian giving an 18 point headstart in the best-of-3 final, some spectators thought that given the way Jack had played all day that it may be too much but Adrian produced the type of snooker needed to take the match to Jack and in the end secured a comfortable 2-0 win to take the President’s Cup title and collect the £60 first prize.  Jack received the consolation of the £30 Runners Up prize.  Both of the losing semi finalists [Patient and Breen] each received £10.

Singles Tournament Success For Wells, Parradine and Selvey!

Saturday 17 May 2014 saw the remaining three Singles finals being played out to a conclusion at Saffron Snooker Club, below is a brief report on each final.

Scratch Plus Singles Final – Nick Selvey v Andy Webb
In the afternoon Nick Selvey and Andy Webb locked horns in the Scratch Plus Singles final and the match was nip-and-tuck all the way through with Selvey initially going 1-0 up [59-15], only to lose the next two frames [52-62, 19-34] to go 2-1 down.  Selvey dug deep to level the match at 2-2 [59-46] in a close frame, and managed to continue momentum to also win the final frame 78-51 and the match 3-2 overall.  Congratulations to Nick in what has been an up-and-down season for him, and commiserations to Andy who by contrast has had an excellent run of form this year and knocked in the joint highest break of 46 in the tournament.
Dan Lewis officiated.

Handicap Singles Final – Steve Parradine v Joe Fanthorpe
With neither player not known for their quick style of play, this match was always going to keep the table light on for a couple of hours!  Joe ‘raced’ into an early lead after the opening frame took around one hour to take the frame [71-49], and Steve ‘quickly’ replied after the second hour had passed to level at 1-1 [67-46].  After a brief comfort/buffet break, the match resumed and Steve ground out frame three 68-55.  With his nose in front, momentum seemed to swing his way and Steve secured victory 74-40 in frame four to win the match 3-1 after around four hours of play and to take the Handicap Singles title.  Both players showed incredible stamina and the match was played with a lot of grit and determination.  Congratulations to Steve who has had his best ever season in the league and richly deserves his ‘Three Player Division – Player of the Year’ Award.  Commiserations to Joe who had a fantastic second half in the league and won the President’s Cup plate.
Mark Cooper refereed and Stewart Hart scored the match.

Scratch Singles Final – Jonathan Wells v Darren Edmonston
Given the form both players have shown in the second half of the season and commencing at 6.30pm in a best-of-seven final, many had thought that by 9pm we would have a winner…however for the first time in league history the Scratch Final went the distance not only in frames, time (4 hours), but right down to the final black!

With both players struggling to find their form, frames were traded all the way through the match.  Darren took the first frame after a lengthy safety exchange [71-37, breaks DE28] and Jonathan levelled at 1-1 [69-41, breaks JW32, DE30].  Jonathan then took the lead in the match 2-1 [58-37] and the players took a 15 minute comfort/buffet break to collect their thoughts.

On the re-start, an in-off on the black by Darren forced a re-spotted black which he coolly potted to take the frame [72-65, breaks JW46, DE25].  Darren continued the momentum winning the next [63-23] to lead 3-2 and one frame away from victory, but a nicely constructed break of 52 by Jonathan once again levelled the match at 3-3 [78-6, breaks JW52].

With a final frame decider in play Darren again seized the initiative but in going down to the colours and trailing after potting the blue, Jonathan need pink and black for victory.  In potting the pink, Jonathan tried to move the black off the side cushion but narrowly missed it and instead attempted a double to the corner pocket which came very close.  Further attempts by both Darren and Jonathan eventually ended with Jonathan dispatching a mid range black into the corner pocket for a deserved 4-3 victory.  On the night both players didn’t play at their best by any stretch of the imagination and it was one of those matches apart from the final ball there was nothing to separate the two players.  Congratulations to Jonathan in winning the Scratch Singles title once again, the last time being in 2004/05.  Darren is also a former winner from the 2008/09 season.
Dan Lewis officiated.

The DMC Leisure Saffron Walden & District Snooker League would like to thank Saffron Snooker Club for providing the tables for these finals, and to Dan Lewis, Mark Cooper and Stewart Hart for their officiating duties.

Halls & Westwood Storm To Memorial Cup Victory In Final Round Thriller

Sunday 24 November 2013 saw the Memorial Cup Tournament held at Saffron Snooker Club with a new and exciting format, Scotch Doubles.

With 16 entrants on the day, the 8 doubles pairings played 7 round robin matches of one frame, with the winner of the group taking the title.  To ensure the rounds flowed, all frames started at the same time and a 30 minute time limit was put on each frame which added to the tension as the minutes ticked by towards the end of each round.  Normal doubles handicaps were used for each pairing but due to the reduced potential scoring ability of the format they were halved which gave everyone a fair chance of competing on a level playing field.

Going into the final round, Halls & Westwood had 5 points, closely followed by Saville & Turner, Rule & Gibson and Spackman & Cooper all on 4 points.  With the final round already pre-drawn at the start of the day, Saville & Turner played Rule & Gibson for a potential 5 points total hoping that Halls & Westwood lost their final round, but in a twist, they were playing Spackman & Cooper who were also on contention for the title.  In a potential winner takes all for Halls & Westwood or face a three way play off, they continued the consistent form shown throughout the day and pulled another frame win out the bag storming to victory over Spackman & Cooper and took the title winning 6 out of 7 frames during the tournament.  Rule & Gibson finished runners up with 5 points by beating Saville & Turner in the final round.

The high break prize went to Saville & Turner who clicked into gear with an excellent 37, no mean feat when taking alternate shots!

The new format was a roaring success on the day with everyone enjoying the tournament.  The Committee hope for continued support from league players next season so we can continue this new tournament format and build on the success.  If you weren’t able to come along on Sunday, get 4 players together and try it in your own club the next time you are looking for something different to do!

Many thanks to all those that turned up on the day to support the tournament, and a special thank you to Des and Mark Cooper for kindly hosting at Saffron Snooker Club.  The tournament was run by Peter Saville, assisted by Stuart Turner and Mark Cooper.

The winners, Mark Halls and Ben Westwood kindly donated their prize money to the Christmas Charity Raffle so stand a chance of winning one of the two pairs of afternoon/evening session tickets available to see The Masters Snooker Tournament at Alexandra Palace in January. Lucky numbers for the raffle can be bought at Saffron Snooker Club at £2 each.  Each pair of snooker tickets is worth £90 so well worth a flutter given also that all proceeds will be donated to a charity which will be chosen by the winners of the Memorial Cup Mark and Ben.
