The Annual President’s Cup, sponsored by Bullet Brickwork UK Ltd was held on Sunday 31 January 2016 at Saffron Snooker Club, Saffron Walden, Essex.  The handicap singles best-of-3-frames event was supported with a strong field of 27 league players in attendance, all hoping to win the first prize of £80 and be the next name engraved on the prestigious President’s Cup.

Peter Saville and Mark Halls shake hands before the 2016 President’s Cup final

Semi Final Results;
Peter Saville 2-0 Richard Malyon
Mark Halls 2-0 Steve Stalley

Being virtually a scratch final, Mark received a 1 point headstart and in the first frame produced possibly his best frame of the day potting everything in sight and rapidly took the first frame by over 50 points.  Peter responded with a consistent display of potting in the second to draw the match level at 1-1.  With the title coming down to a deciding frame, Peter produced the type of snooker needed to take the match to Mark and in the end was too strong and secured a 2-1 win to take the President’s Cup title and collect the £80 first prize.  Mark received the consolation of the £40 Runners Up prize which he has donated to charity.  Both of the losing semi finalists, Steve Stalley and Richard Malyon each received £20.

Memorial Cup: Tournament Report – Marshall 2-0 Braybrooke

The Memorial Cup took place at Saffron Snooker Club on 29 November 2015.  The tournament is held annually to remember league players that are sadly no longer with us.

With 19 league players present this year’s tournament was played in the same format as last year.  Round robin handicapped singles, players split into two groups, time limit of 30 minutes for each round.  The top two from each group progressing into the semi finals.

Group A was heavily contested with three players tied on 6 frames (Tom Sawyer, Rob Spackman & John Manley).  On head to head results Tom Sawyer progressed to the semi finals as group winner and Rob Spackman as group runner up.

Andy Marshall progressed as winner of group B with a game to spare.  The runner up position was wide open with three player’s level on 5 frames going into the final round. Michael (Spike) Braybrooke & Martin Capdeville finished level with 6 frames each.  Spike Braybrooke progressed to the semi finals as group runner up.

The semi finals best of three frames (without time limit):

SF1: Tom Sawyer +20 v Spike Braybrooke +16

SF2: Rob Spackman -29 v Andy Marshall +5

Tom who had progressed well after a poor start in his group had no answers for Spike who won the match 2-0 to reach the final.  The other semi final went to a final frame.  After being a frame down Andy Marshall knocked in the highest break of the day (49) to level the match at 1-1.  The third frame looked to be Andy’s but after an unfortunate in-off when playing the black and subsequent free ball Rob seemed to have a chance.  A nervy end pursued with both players having chances to win the match.  But with a nice pot on the final pink Andy progressed to the final to play Spike.

Final: Spike Braybrooke +16 vs Andy Marshall +5.  With both players showing good form this looked to be a good matchup, but Andy had the upper hand throughout winning 2-0.  Well deserved title for Andy Marshall after playing very well all day.

Tickets for next year’s Masters Snooker championship were auctioned, donated by the league. Many thanks to Paul Capdeville’s winning bid of £50.00 to be donated to East Anglia Air Ambulance.

The league committee would like thank the players present for supporting the tournament, Saffron Snooker Club for hosting the event and providing tables of the highest quality, and finally to Dan Lewis, Simon Chapman and Phil Chapman for running the tournament.

2015 Memorial Cup Winner – Andy Marshall

Runner-Up – Michael (Spike) Braybrooke

World Snooker Coach Andrew Green Wins Memorial Cup

Sunday 30 November 2014 saw the Memorial Cup Tournament [sponsored by Saffron Walden based taxi company Crocus Cars] held at Saffron Snooker Club with another new format being tried out, Round Robin Handicap Singles.

With the tournament only attracting 22 entrants on the day out of the 32 hoped, the entrants were split into two groups of 11 players.  Each played one frame against everyone else in their group and the winner and runner up from each group qualified for the semi finals.  For only £10 for a minimum of 10 frames of snooker the tournament proved fantastic value for those that entered.

To ensure the rounds flowed, all frames started at the same time and a 30 minute time limit was put on each frame which added to the tension as the minutes ticked by towards the end of each round.  Out of the

With a few twists, turns and all manner of possible scenarios going into the final 2 rounds, Chris Patient and Andrew Green emerged from Group 1 and Mark Patmore [aka Potmore] and Simon Chapman came through in Group 2.

The 1 frame semi finals saw Andrew Green and Simon Chapman tussling on the pink and black with Andrew booking his place in the final after potting the pink, and Chris Patient and Mark Patmore battling it out on the other table with Chris eventually emerging victorious.  All 4 semi finalists were strong in their respective groups and played very consistently all day.

Photo:  World Snooker Coach Andrew Green and Chris Patient shake hands prior to the final

WP_20141130_001In the final, Chris went 1-0 up and given the form he had showed during the day seemed assured of clinching victory, but Andrew’s consistent cue action helped him level at 1-1 and then secure victory in the deciding frame to run out a 2-1 winner.

The high break prize for the tournament went to Adam Ingram with 53.

Whilst the new format ran smoothly and was a success on the day with everyone enjoying the snooker, the Committee had hoped for more support for this change in format.  With the 3 man team and scotch doubles formats being tried in previous seasons and themselves being not very well supported, it would be a shame if this tournament were to be removed from the season calendar.  One to discuss at the AGM…

Many thanks to all those that turned up on the day to support the tournament, and a special thank you to Des and Mark Cooper for kindly hosting at Saffron Snooker Club.  The tournament was run by Dan Lewis and Adam Ingram.  Thanks also to Dan for refereeing the final.

Following the conclusion of the group stage rounds, an auction took place for a pair of tickets for the Masters Snooker Tournament in January…after a slow start a bidding war broke out and after several outbids, Martin Capdeville’s was the winner with a generous £60 bid.  The money goes to Diabetes UK in memory of John Webb.
